2024 Chevrolet Trax: Comprehensive Test Drive Review

Hello, my dear viewers. LDR Car here for a test drive program. Today, we're going to test drive the all-new 2024 Chevrolet Trax. This brand-new model comes with the most affordable price tag within the brand for a long time. So, let's take a clear look at it from inside out. I'll take it for a spin, and then I'll share my genuine thoughts with you.

Exterior:

The 2024 Chevrolet Trax is a complete departure from its predecessor. It's longer at 178 inches and has a longer wheelbase of 106 inches. It's significantly more extended and sits a bit lower. It now resembles more of a car than a short, compact SUV. This fresh design exudes a higher level of luxury. The starting price for this model is $21,495 for the base LS trim. The top-tier Active trim that we're testing starts at $27,000. This is the most you can spend. The exterior design is loaded with character, with striking sculpted lines on the hood and a stylish front grille that mirrors the modern DNA seen in recent models. The attractive contour lines on the sides and the black cladding add an SUV touch to its car-like appearance.

Interior:

Inside the Trax, the shift towards a more car-like experience continues. The seating position feels more sedan-like, with legs stretched forward and a windshield far ahead. However, the slightly elevated seating position and commanding view of the road remain. Materials in the cabin are surprisingly good for an entry-level model. The fully-loaded Active trim features soft-stitch accents on the door panels and vinyl seating, which offers a leather-like feel. The seats are a bit firm, and the interior comfort is satisfactory. The cabin boasts an 8-inch digital instrument cluster, an 11-inch landscape-style infotainment display, and a wireless charger for your phone.

Infotainment and Technology:

The infotainment system features Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, AM/FM radio, Bluetooth, and available satellite radio. The menus are easy to navigate, and the user experience is simplified. The system provides the basics for connectivity and entertainment, but it lacks some of the advanced features found in higher-end models.

Performance and Handling:

The Trax is powered by a unique 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine, producing 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. It's paired with a conventional six-speed automatic transmission. The power delivery is adequate, with a distinct three-cylinder engine note and turbo boost characteristics. The acceleration is a bit sluggish off the line but picks up speed once the power kicks in. The transmission does a decent job of shifting, but some refinement is needed. The ride and handling feel more car-like due to its longer wheelbase. The chassis is stable on the highway, offering a comfortable and agile ride.

Fuel Efficiency:

The Trax is rated at 28 MPG city, 32 MPG highway, and 30 MPG combined. During testing, it achieved around 26 MPG, likely impacted by factors such as high temperatures and air conditioning use.

Conclusion:

The 2024 Chevrolet Trax offers a compelling package for an entry-level model. Its car-like characteristics, comfortable ride, and a range of features make it an intriguing choice. Although it lacks some advanced technology and refinement, the Trax still delivers a pleasant driving experience. Its pricing puts it in competition with various other models in the $20,000 to $30,000 range, making it a worthwhile option to consider. Overall, the 2024 Chevrolet Trax earns a solid 4 out of 5 stars, combining affordability and practicality in a distinctive package.
